I am all for wireless technology and see potential for many positive patient outcomes. One of my concerns is regarding IT support. Currently I believe that many healthcare organizations have difficulties with the IT support personal understanding the needs of healthcare professionals and consumers. How can the 2 worlds of healthcare and information technology support services build stronger bridges to work better together for the consumer?

I agree with your comments Jayne. For example, the unit that I work in monitors telemetry for the other wards in our hospital. There have been times when the system has gone down. When this happens during the night or weekend, we have to contact someone at home and then wait for them to get to the building before the problem can be assessed and fixed. During this time, the patients on the wards are without cardiac monitoring. We need to be prepared that technology comes with its own set of problems/challenges that need to be addressed and worked out over time. This can often be very frustrating.

I share your similar frustrations with lack of IT support...in viewing our own organization, our IT team could become more "specialized" within their departments. For example, we would like to have 1 full time IT to be available for our data collection and for inputting, troubleshooting, etc. At the present time, we have 3 IT members who basically respond to "every concern" in the building (dealing with every department). I think if tasks were more broken down and better managed, then even the IT team could feel more specialized and better able to respond to concerns in a more timely and efficient manner. Laura
I think with the way healthcare and technology are going that we will need IT support 24/7. Just as we have other diciplines IT will be the next. I believe in the future there will be specialized areas of IT specifically geared towards healthcare.

If our system crashes, we are putting those under our care at high risk unless there is a safe back up system. I too believe we need strong IT support for these novel technologies.
